Monks for the Third Millennium - Ageless and New

The newest member of our priory in Schuyler is Brother Damian Cayetano.  Bro. Damian, from Virginia Beach, VA, was received into Novitiate on Saturday, Aug. 4, 2007.  At present, he spends the first year of Novitiate at Conception Abbey, MO.  On the photograph, Bro. Damian is in conversation with a group of young people during a retreat at St. Benedict Center.

Father Paul Kasun (formerly Fr. Stanley) pronounced his Temporary Monastic Vows at Christ the King Priory on Jan. 8, 2006 and renewed them for another two years on Jan. 6, 2008.  Fr. Paul is from Omaha, NE.  The focus of his ministry is on the Hispanic population of our area.  At his office "El Puente" (The Bridge) he assists Hispanic people, among other things, with immigration problems.

Benedict of Norcia 480-547

The Father of Western Monasticism understood that each individual is called to a deeper encounter with Jesus. Therefore, Benedict invites his followers:

Listen ... Accept ... Respond ...

Listen

"Listen, my son, to the teachings of your master, and turn to them with the ear of your heart." The opening word of Benedict's Rule for Monks gives the directive for each Christian, and the monk in particular, how to structure life's journey by being attentive to Christ's teaching and example. Prayer times in community, the daily celebration of the Eucharist, opportunities for quiet times in meditation and lectio are interwoven with our work schedule and life in community.

Accept

The monk accepts Christ's invitiation for life according to the monastic values. This unfolds as he passes through the initial periods of formation as affiliate, postulant, novice, and junior monk. At the end of his formation, the monk declares publicly his intent to embrace the monastic way of stability, fidelity to the monastic life and obedience according to the Rule of Benedict, in the Rite of Solemn Professsion. Each monk has his own gifts and talents. Our community is open to foster these gifts, and to find meaningful work for each member which benefit our common ministries. A whole spectrum of opportunities can unfold in which the monk also grows as an individual.

A Religious Vocation is a Gift from God
To accept it means to trust our God who does not disappoint us in our expectations and longings. An exciting journey, indeed. Anxiety and uncertainty at the beginning is normal. In the community of brothers we sustain each other, and God gives the grace of perseverance.

Respond

Come and "see how the Lord in his love shows us the way of life." This invitation from the Rule of St. Benedict is for everyone who wishes to follow the Lord's way, and especially for YOU who are searching.
